English as a Second Language
Specially trained teachers provide support in acquiring English as well as grade level content for "students of limited English proficiency (LEP) which means a student whose primary language is other than English and whose language skills are such that the student has difficulty performing ordinary classwork in English." (Texas Education Code, Chapter 29.051)
Students are identified for assessment upon enrollment through the Home Language Survey. State recognized assessment data is analyzed by a Language Proficiency Assessment Committee (LPAC) made up of a specialist, parent in the district and campus administrator. Intervention and accommodations are provided for the student based on a proficiency level ranging from beginning to advanced. Each student identified as LEP will be monitored through state assessment system for ELs (English Learners), Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS) until an advanced-high level is achieved to exit limited proficiency status.
The goal of the ESL program is to help students develop language skills necessary to be successful students and members of society. This can be done most effectively by meeting the following objectives:
1. nurture self-pride and self-identity in each student’s linguistic and cultural heritage.
2. develop proficiency in the English language.
3. reach a level of proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening
4. reach a level of proficiency in all content areas.
5. provide curricular and extra-curricular opportunities for EL in a similar fashion to our non-EL students.
